Refinishing Your Deck for Summer Relaxing
When warmer spring temperatures finally arrive, it's time to clean and stain, repaint or seal your wood deck so it’s ready for summer entertaining and relaxing.
Weather dictates the timing when staining a deck. It must be dry and at least 50 degrees (including overnight) for oil-based deck stain and sealer products to cure properly. |
Wood decks are beautiful, but Wisconsin’s weather extremes take their toll. Regular maintenance is critical, particularly moisture sealing. “If you don’t maintain it, you will end up replacing it sooner than necessary,” says Brian Schwaller. “ Prolonged moisture exposure rots wood. If you have mildew or mold growing on your deck, it can actually start ‘eating’ the deck.” Mold also creates a slip hazard, as it’s very slick when wet. Intense sun exposure can also damage unprotected wood.
“Wood decks need protection, whether that’s from sun damage, or from mold and mildew because it’s in a shaded area where it never dries out,” Schwaller says. “In either scenario you have to protect the wood and your investment.”
Schwaller’s Painting provides deck cleaning, staining, painting and sealing for residential and commercial clients across Eastern Wisconsin. Our team of professional painters and project managers has over 110 years of combined experience, and we refinish hundreds of decks every year. We also work with condo associations, maintaining more than 120 decks.
“Thorough deck surface preparation and using the right stain products are essential for a good looking, protective finish on a deck,” Schwaller says. Our crew typically starts by power washing the deck to remove dirt, mold and mildew, then scrapes and sands to remove any loose material. Then we apply the best deck stain to achieve the look you want - a solid color stain, a semi-transparent deck stain, or a clear deck sealer. Deck painting is another option if you prefer an opaque color. “We’re careful to avoid getting deck stain on the house siding or any concrete below the deck, covering everything up so cleanup is quick and there’s no mess for the homeowner.”
Late Spring through early Fall is the short Wisconsin "weather window" for exterior painting and staining projects, so schedules fill quickly - be sure to book your project as early as possible to ensure that we can get it done this season.
